Get away from it all and relax with the gal pals in a bucolic setting complete with adventurous activities, a spa and a down-home, friendly staff at the Wildcatter Ranch.

While on the surface a ranch may not seem like the ideal locale for a girlfriend getaway, the Wildcatter Ranch, which bills itself as a ranch resort, is the perfect spot to gather fiends for a long weekend focused on rugged relaxation.

It’s only 90 miles away from Fort Worth, Texas, but the 1500 acre Wildcatter Ranch provides guests with a glimpse of what life was like in a simpler time. Set in the rolling Texas Hills, the ranch offers up a wealth of outdoor experiences coupled with a focus on relaxation and decompressing from the daily grind.

Adventure Activities Encourage Bonding

The ranch is known for its equestrian activities and guests can take advantage of several daily trail rides on experienced quarter horses. Head wrangler, Jay Brewer ,a professional rodeo bull fighter organizes the rides and gives an intriguing demonstration of his skills as a horse whisper with his 12-year-old gelding, Chip.

For adventurous gal pals, the ranch offers a plethora of activities that expose women to sports they don’t often do. At the skeet shooting range women can channel their inner Annie Oakley as they grab a shotgun and try and do their best damage on the clay pigeons that fly from one of six firing locations.

From shotgun to bow and arrow, the archery range lets women test their accuracy as they aim for the bulls eye. Activity directors Don and Jim are on hand to explain how to shoot and offer up tips to improve.

If the weather cooperates an ideal way to see the extent of the ranch property is a canoe ride on Connor Creek or an ATV odyssey through the rolling hills. Hiking, biking and fishing are also available at the ranch.

Relaxing After Outdoor Fun

No girlfriend getaway would be complete without a visit to the spa. The Sage Spa at Wildcatter is a small facility, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for with a terrific masseuse, Brent. Whether sore from a newfound passion for archery or simply in need of release from chronic stress, Brent will customize the treatment to fit the guests needs. The spa also offers up facials, wraps and pedicures.

Ladies will love to continue the relaxation by the infinity edge pool and hot tub on a ridge overlooking a wide expense of virgin land.

Cowboy Food Goes Gourmet

The perfect end to a relaxing day begins with a happy hour in The Blowout Saloon. Now don’t think this is some redneck bar--the Saloon won a 2007 Wine Spectator Award. Not to be outdone, the adjoining restaurant, the Wildcatter Steakhouse, boasts an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator in addition to several local awards and accolades. The restaurant features well-priced steaks, ribs and seafood along with cowboy chow favorites like chicken friend steak.

According to owner Anne Skipper the ranch gives women the chance to move outside their comfort zones. Away from the men in their lives, they’re more open to new experiences and not worried about looking silly trying a new activity. The result is a shared experience conquering a new task and a weekend full of learning, laughing and utter rugged relaxation.
