The restaurant has a large menu of steaks, including standard cuts of Filet Mignon, New York Strip and Rib-Eye. The steaks are offered in different sizes for different appetites. The prices are premium, with beef choices in the $30 to $40 dollar range.
Seafood selections run slightly less, and all menu options are ala carte. Of course, appetizers, including the outstanding coconut shrimp, are extra, but salads and side dishes are also charged separately.
In addition to the large number of entrees on the menu, the skilled wait staff at Bohanan’s also brings out a tray that shows other cuts of beef available that are off the menu.
For the connoisseur or the adventurous, the Japanese Akaushi beef and bone-in steaks, available in different cuts, are priced considerably above the other entrees. The market price was roughly double the prices of the comparable menu entrees.
All the steaks are expertly prepared and stylishly presented. There is an extensive list of seafood items, and the chef will not hesitate to pull something from the menu if he feels it not up to standards of the restaurant.
The restaurant has a sommelier, very necessary considering the large wine list. As befitting the menu prices, the prices on the wine list are expensive, but the sommelier will provide guidance based on variety and price.
For the non-wine drinker, cocktails and soft drinks are expertly made. The prices might discourage families, but the restaurant does accommodate younger guests.
There are an array of side dishes and steak toppings that one would expect in a fine restaurant. Along with the standard baked potato and asparagus, expect to fine unusual items such as a delicious macaroni and cheese.
The servers are very experienced, helpful and flexible. The service for a group of 18 took about 2 ½ hours, but did not feel leisurely or hurried, but properly paced. The restaurant became very crowded as the evening progressed, even on a weeknight.
Reservations are suggested. Valet parking is available. Unlike many of the restaurants on the Riverwalk, there is no outside seating.
For an upscale dinner in San Antonio away from the crowds of the Riverwalk, Bohanan’s offers fine steaks and seafood. The prices are steep, but the experience is first rate, and provides another memory from the tourist destination of the Alamo City.
